Yoshitsune ("yoshi")

April 18, 1994 - September 22, 2006

Kojiro ("Koji")

April 18, 1994 - March 5, 2007

This is one of my favorite pictures and without a doubt the way that I will always remember Yosh.  He was always at my side, watching over me and the family.

This is Koji (bottom) and Yoshi wrestling shortly after I brought them home.  Yosh was the bigger and more aggressive of the two at the time and seemed to always end up on top.  Koji, however, was always able to end an exchange because he would take the rough housing to the extreme.  He would not just wrestle and bite back, he would bite an ear as hard as he could until he got a yelp out of Yosh.  He was the master at disproportionate retaliation.

This is the "pack" back in the townhouse days.  Picture if you will, this 300 odd lbs. of dog occupying a small town home.  We had a college campus behind the house that had multiple fields and was ideal for dog walking.  After walking the pack twice a day regardless of weather (we even walked them during the huge snow storm in VA when the mailman would not come out) we developed an "understanding" about walking off leash. This platform was along side the trail and meant as an exercise station but was actually an excellent spot for an early morning pic.

The photo above may just look like another poorly behaved dog on the sofa but this was not Yosh's way.  I remember that he came in the house one day and just walked up on the couch.  He had never done this before but seemed to think that somehow it was the right thing to do.  So we left him there. He looked very comfortable and I am not sure I can remember him ever doing it again.

Trilogy of photos above may be clicked on to render a larger image.

The group of pictures above illustrates the character of this dog and the reason that I could travel as much as I did.  I knew that Yosh would always be there to protect my family.  When I wasn't home, he would sleep next to the daughter's bed.  He would be in the doorway of the bathroom during the nightly bath while Koji slept on the landing of the stairs.  I know this sounds odd but he provided me the peace of mind I needed to pursue my career.

This demonstrates the gentleness of this dog.  Akitas are called the baby sitters in Japan.  I could not think of a more devoted or diligent guardian for my child.
