A Long Day; A Sick Ewe
A Long Day; A Sick Ewe
I can tell spring is near because the days are getting longer. They are filled with more work and “to-do’s”. Great for feeling productive and the sense of getting things accomplished...hard on the body.
Today was a long day. One of our favorite ewes; #264 went ill. It appears she has pregnancy toxemia. With a month and change away from lambing; the lambs inside the ewes take ALL the ewe has to give. Particularly if there are demanding twins or triplets. Sometimes; this happens at the expense of the ewe. Called the sheep vet out and we pumped her full of uber antibiotics; steroids, poly glycol, Vitamin B, and Calcium. He also left a special alfalfa mash that is full of bacteria and probios hopefully to get her rumen rumbling again. Poor 264. Hopefully she will come around. She seemed a tad perkier by this evening, but that could have been my wishful thinking. She will continue her uber antibiotics, polyglycol and Vitamin B for the next two days. We are hopeful that by morning she will want to rise and go about her business. Poor girl.
In other news today; Indy rejoined Joe, Cybele, Boo and Willow. A complete non-event. We have had some additional demand for our fresh lamb that will be picked up from the butcher on Friday. Shocking...our sheep line item in the farm books may actually turn a profit this year? Also picked up the pelts today which will need several weeks of drying time before being sent to the Amish for tanning.
The hens have been enjoying the warm weather. I can’t decide (nor, I think could they) if they were having a dirt bath or a sun bathe... The other photo is Rachel our almost 9 yo with Mosby...both looking very happy indeed.
