After much deliberation and research we have decided to add some Large Black Hogs to our farm. Our group will be small (to start) and consist of a boar and 3 females. The young ladies are called, Gertie, Myrtle and Bertha (although I can’t tell one from the other). The boar is called Grawp. Our original Large Black Hog male was Hagrid. Sadly, Hagrid did not live beyond 13 weeks and died young with a suspected hole in his heart. The breeder replaced Hagrid with a full sibling and brother of Hagrid who we call Grawp. (Who some of you may know was the half giant brother of Hagrid). The arrived this spring as weanlings, so we have been
enjoying getting to know them and watching them grow. We will eventually breed little hog-lets and raise them for pork as well as offer them for breeding stock. The Large Blacks are a rare heritage breed of hog and are sometimes known as cottage pigs that are thrifty and can thrive on pasture which makes them ideal in our minds as the thought
of a “high density” operation does not appeal to us or fit into our long term plan for the use of our land. As their name implies they are definitely large with weights reaching up to 700 lbs! In spite of their intimidating size, they are known to be among the most docile and friendly breed of hogs today. Please
