A Fast January
I cannot believe it is just about time to flip the calendar page to February! Usually it feels like January being a long month and a cold one at that, that it creeps through the 31 days in slow-mo. February on the other hand; being a short month always feels extra long to me because by February, I am more than ready for spring. I have to continually remind myself that there really are two more months of winter. Although you would like to think of March being spring...really, weather-wise...it is not.
Aetius has a date with the transport on Mar 2nd, so he will be on his way in a few weeks time. I am quite looking forward to only two fields of horses come spring time when Joe and his girls will all occupy one field and my two elderlies another.
Planning to reduce cattle numbers by 2 head in the spring time when I take two in to the abattoir. Will have to make a date for them. Freezers are low with only really ground right now; and will look to sell a 1/2 or two 1/2’s and keep one for ourselves. Oh how I miss those filets!!
As is usual practice in January, an order has been placed for our Thanksgiving turkles. Have reduced the number this year (since all our farm help will be in college....can you say empty nesters!?) Finally our hens have started popping out an egg or two. With only 9 mature hens left, I also placed an order for 15 new Speckled Sussex ladies who will join the group. There just seems something so wrong about purchasing grocery store eggs when for the last decade or more we have been up to our eyeballs in eggs... with as many as a couple hundred hens at one point. Now that was a lot of egg washing!!
Looks like our hay stores will get us through the winter. The cows are good eaters. The horses are far better at pacing themselves.
