Successful Harvest
Okay, so not everyone was volun-told. When I went into the barn on Wednesday (harvest day) morning; I found my handi-capable turkey and Dr. Cornelius curled up together in the bed of straw in the stall sleeping peacefully together. The jenny had come to us as a day old poult with a funky leg. She had to be removed from the others relatively early on otherwise she’d have been trampled by her mates as they grew older, bigger and less polite.
It seemed Dr. Cornelius and the jenny had made friends and were quite happy together. So together they stayed. So there is one turkey left; and she will live our her days as long as they may be as the good Mrs. Cornelius.
Dr. Cornelius; old and a bit broken himself is probably about 17 years old. This is ancient for a goat. Sunday was to be a beautiful day; but he did not want to come out of the stall and leave the Mrs. Even enticed by food, he would not rise off of his front knees and follow the food to the sunny outdoors.
Turkey harvest was perfect. The weather was perfect. The turkeys were cooperative and we were extremely efficient. Even with some job rotations we had our best performance to date I’d say. Thanks to all our turkey customers new and the repeats...we hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving.
Side note; no turkey day bonfire this year. Turkey day was frigid...even the roar of a giant bonfire could not lure us away from the alternative.... a nice warm bed in a horizontal position with the eyelids closed! We were all especially knackered this year!
