Farm Fresh Eggs from Free Range Hens

We currently have a varied flock of about 400+ laying hens at various stages of life that call Bay Haven Farm home.  Because we are a heritage breeds farm, many of these hens are heritage chickens.  The brood consists of  Anconas, Lakenvelders, Speckled Sussex, New Hampshire Reds, Australorp, Phoenix, Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, Araucanas, Partridge Rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Minorcas (most of these are on the Priority Lists with the ALBC). Our chickens are happy chickens. When I go to open the coop door in the morning they are treated with a large baggie of food scraps.

Consequently, any time they see me coming they all stampede
toward me thinking I must always travel with a baggie of goodies! They are free range hens who have at their access the safety and security of their barn yard coop.  More often than not, they prefer to spend the day roaming the farm, scratching through my perennial garden and scraping through whatever looks good.  By nightfall they all mosey back to the safety of their coop to be closed in for the night. These heritage breed hens are kept strictly for egg production. They are carefully looked after and protected by our Anatolian Shepherd Dogs who are a team of 4 on constant livestock protection duty.

Interesting Facts About

Farm Fresh Free Range Eggs

Studies show that hens raised on pasture show 4-6 times as much vitamin D as your typical supermarket egg.    Further tests went on to reveal that eggs from pasture raised hens may also contain:

  1. 1/3 less cholesterol

  2. 1/4 less saturated fat

  3. 2/3 more vitamin A

  4. 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids

  5. 3 times more vitamin E

  6. 7 times more beta carotene

So...are you ready for this one...the eggs you buy in your supermarket are already at least 3 weeks old and can be as old as 6 weeks old...officially; an egg is still considered “fresh” at 45 days old!  Try some Farm Fresh Eggs - you will never go back to supermarket ones.
